NEWS YOU CAN USE FROM VANDYKE SOFTWARE® The focus for this month is passing along quick and handy
tips to pump up your productivity with the SecureCRT® 5.0 beta release.
Here's a hot tip: beta 4 was released on April 20 and beta 5 will be coming
soon. So check the VanDyke Software web site or look for e-mail if you
are subscribed to one of the release notification lists. ------------- 1. Tip: Launching SecureCRT 5.0 With Multiple Session Tabs ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Many beta users are enjoying the new tabbed sessions in SecureCRT and CRT 5.0, and discovering how the tab concept is connected to many of the applications' preference options. Here's a cool connection: if you often open two or more sessions on startup, you can use a SecureCRT shortcut to do this for you, tabs and all. The /S command-line switch is the key to opening tabbed sessions. The syntax looks like this: securecrt.exe /S host1 /S host2 /S host3 where "host1", "host2", etc. are session names in your session list. You can create a SecureCRT shortcut or modify one to add any number of sessions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For anyone who likes to save time by not reaching for the mouse, here are some new keyboard shortcuts in SecureCRT 5.0. CTRL+F4: Close (and disconnect) active tab CTRL+F4 and ALT+B work in CRT 5.0 as well. Of course, there are ways for mouse lovers to invoke these commands. You can open an SFTP tab for any SSH2 session by right-clicking on the session tab. And a new toolbar button just to the right of Quick Connect (third from the left) opens a new session in a new tab. But for a keyboard purist, ALT+B is just the real thing. ----------------------------------------------------------------- When you use the new tabs feature of SecureCRT 5.0, you might notice that each tab has a vertical bar in front of the label. Why? Three colors provide a quick visual status for each tab session's state. Green: Live connection It's a small thing, but valuable if you know the color code. Tab status indicator color is on by default, and starting with beta 5, color will be configured in the Global Options dialog. See "Heard on the Forum" below for a user poll on tab status indicator color preference. http://forums.vandyke.com/showthread.php?t=677
--------------------------------------------------------------- As the newsletter readership continues to grow, it is more important than ever for us to learn your wants, needs, likes, and dislikes. Subscribers will receive an e-mail invitation to take an online survey within the next few days, and we would appreciate your participation. Appreciate it so much, in fact, that survey participants will be entered in a drawing for your choice of an iPod shuffle or RadioSHARK player. There will be four winners, so watch for your invitation, and mark those ballots! As always, survey results will be summarized in an upcoming issue. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ SAGE, formerly a USENIX special interest group (SIG) to foster the system administration profession, is reorganizing as an independent entity and seeks nine board members for two-year terms. In a recent e-mail, Leadership Committee chair Greg Rose described the positions and their impact: "Being on the SAGE Board means that you will have a role in controlling the way the organization is run, and the direction it heads ... including publications, communications with members, professional development, conferences, and more.... If you have a vision for your career, this may be the place to make it happen." Anyone interested in being nominated for a board position should e-mail one of the Leadership Committee members below. Esther Filderman:
Don't delay - the deadline for nominations is April 29, 2005. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Beta forum participation continues to be high, evaluating the new releases and discussing new functionality. A recent poll solicits user input on the tab status indicators mentioned in tip #3 above.
