NEWS YOU CAN USE FROM VANDYKE SOFTWARE® As we move into the latter part of the test cycle for major upgrades of SecureCRT®, CRT, and SecureFX®, beta and official releases continue to stream out of VanDyke Software development. So, product news tops the issue this month. We also have a tip on setting window position, bits on a new error reporting method, adding RSS feeds, and a controversial new Steve Jobs biography. A big thank you to all the readers who took the recent survey. We're sifting through the results and responding to comments and questions. Results will be reported in the next newsletter, including the winners of the drawing. ------------- 1. SecureCRT 5.0 New Tab Options Dialog --------------------------------------------------------------- In the April issue, we reported on the new status indicators added to SecureCRT 5.0. With the release of beta 5, focusing on completing the application feature sets before the official release, there is a new dialog for tab options, and enhancements to tab function as well. If "Green = Go" is not your thing, you can now set the status colors for the Connected, Disconnected, and New Input states. And you can control the width of status indicators, or just turn them off. Tab behavior has also been augmented in beta 5. In the new dialog window you can define what happens when you double click on a tab, and select an option to receive a prompt to confirm when closing multiple tabs. There are also new built-in ALT+1, ALT+2 ... ALT+0 keyboard shortcuts to navigate between up to ten tabs (if you prefer a different key combination, you can map this functionality to different keys). You can view a screenshot of the new Tabs dialog on our web site at: http://www.vandyke.com/support/tips/tabui_preview.html Or download SecureCRT 5.0 (beta 5) to try out these new features: http://www.vandyke.com/download/securecrt/beta.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The People's Choice Awards, sponsored by the Shareware Industry Awards Foundation, allow internet users of all stripes to recognize their favorite applications. You can vote for up to seven of your favorites. Votes are accepted though May 31st, so don't delay. To vote for SecureCRT, SecureFX, and other great software, point your browser to: http://www.sic.org/peopleschoice.asp ------------------------------------------------------- You've probably had an application crash before. You might also have seen a dialog come up that offers to submit an error report about the problem for debugging purposes, usually to the application vendor or to Microsoft. VanDyke now has a "Windows Error Reporting" (WER) account with Microsoft that allows us to view crash data that is reported to Microsoft for our programs. Through WER, if there is a fix for the problem you experienced, you can learn about it immediately. In the event that SecureCRT, SecureFX, or another application crashes during operation, you will see a notification dialog, with a button option to send a report to Microsoft using your system's internet connection. Sending in a report helps us gather more information about a problem and its revalence. The error report doesn't replace technical support – if you're having a technical problem, the best way to get it resolved is to contact VanDyke Software Support. But should you encounter an application crash in one of our products, please also consider sending an error report through the WER dialog. It's an easy way for you to quickly submit crash information and see if there's a fix already available for download. ---------------------------------------------------- "More ways to customize my application" is always high on our customers' wish lists. The new session configuration capabilities in SecureFX should do the trick for many of you (yes, SecureCRT has them too). Both SecureCRT and SecureFX benefit from their recent integration and streamlining into true sister products. Not only has integration made them easier to use together, but similar user interfaces mean they are easier to learn. The new SecureFX 3.0 default session allows you to configure your favorite session behavior once, and apply the settings to all existing and future sessions. Or you can choose to apply the settings just to new sessions from that point forward. You can also use the new auto session to specify which session will be launched when you start SecureFX. For more information on SecureFX 3.0, please visit the web site: http://www.vandyke.com/products/beta/securefx/index.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A newsletter reader commented in the annual survey that opening SecureCRT 5.0 with multiple sessions in tabs (covered in the April 2005 newsletter tip #1) is a mixed blessing for him. "The /S gets me a tab, but not a permanently anchored new window (meaning it starts where I left it)." For those who would like to anchor their window position, Product Director Maureen Jett explains how. To anchor a session's window position permanently, open the session
in SecureCRT and move it where you want it. Then go to the Appearance
\ Window page in the Session Options dialog Alternatively, you can use the command-line option /POS, which specifies
the initial position of the SecureCRT window, where x and y represent
the upper left corner of the SecureCRT window SecureCRT.exe /POS 100 50 /S "My Company" /POS can be used alone or in combination with /S. For example, you may want to log into a server and have multiple sessions visible at the same time in different window positions. You could do this by setting up multiple shortcuts or by creating a batch file with the following format: SecureCRT.exe /S "My Company"
/POS <x> <y> You can find more information on command-line options in the "Table of Command-Line Options" and "Table of Protocol-Specific Command-Line Options" sections of the SecureCRT Help files. To see last month's tip on opening multiple sessions with /S, you can find the April newsletter on the web site: http://www.vandyke.com/aboutus/news/newsletters/index.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tim Eck, a Java programmer at Terracotta mentioned in a survey comment that an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) "feed" for the newsletter would help him keep track of it more efficiently. For those of you who use RSS readers, we can satisfy your thirst for information access with three new feeds. You can new subscribe to RSS feeds not just for the newsletter, but also for the What's New and Download web pages, and be automatically alerted to any new material. Whatever your alert level, "News You Can Use" will still be delivered the old-fashioned way, by e-mail once a month, personally addressed to you or your favorite avatar.
