NEWS YOU CAN USE FROM VANDYKE SOFTWARE® One of the main reasons we're here is to make admins' lives
easier. That comes through loud and clear in a recent SearchNetworking.com
article on users' views of the SecureCRT® and SecureFX® 6.0 releases.
On the same subject, this month's tip shows how to get multiple sessions
started more easily. If logging is your thing, look at the call for pre-beta
testers of new VShell® server syslog capabilities. We see also that
the forum natives have been restless, discussing the new client upgrades
and looking for ways to tunnel through multiple hosts. Finally, please
take our brief web-based survey so we can learn what you value most in
current and future versions of SecureCRT and SecureFX. ------------- 1. Tip: Streamline Connecting To Multiple Secure Shell Sessions -------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Many of you may have received an invitation to take a satisfaction survey following your purchase of a VanDyke application. What you may not know is that we really do read all the responses and we answer questions that customers ask in the surveys. In a recent customer survey a SecureCRT user requested the ability to activate an "agent SSH2/Public Key" at the start of the day, put in their password, and then connect to multiple servers at the same time. Actually, SecureCRT and SecureFX can already do this for both password and public key authentication, with the right session and options configuration. Read the complete tip on how to streamline entering your authentication credentials for multiple sessions. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- VanDyke Software development is seeking testers for new syslog capabilities in an upcoming version of the VShell server. To improve activity monitoring and problem-solving, log data will have more storage options, with support for logging to a remote syslog server. If you would like to test this new capability in pre-beta software, send
e-mail to
. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As often as we hear from customers how you use SecureCRT and SecureFX to save critical time in maintaining and securing your networks, it was bound to hit the news. The lead article for February 14th on the SearchNetworking Web site discusses the 6.0 releases, relating it to the increase in business use of remote access and the demand for better tools to manage complex networks. In "Remote access security management software is a time saver for network administrators," by Tessa Parmenter, our customers speak loudly and clearly about the advantages of VanDyke Software products. You'll want to read the entire piece, but here are some of the statements that we think say volumes about the value of SecureCRT: "SecureCRT is an integral part of my day-to-day work. Without it,
I couldn't do what I do...." "I had to rely on a few different products to achieve the same result
that I get from SecureCRT. Using VBScript, I can reduce the time required
for many tasks by a rough factor of 10. Sure, there are other tools out
there, but they are much more expensive and don't offer the configuration
detail." "SecureCRT is like PuTTY on steroids. The addition of the button
bar is fabulous and allows for quick config snippets." These users also cited responsive support and quick response to bug reports as factors in their selection of SecureCRT. Read the complete article at the SearchNetworking site. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Forum user Gibbo recently asked how to create a tunnel from local through Host1, and then from Host2 to Host3 so that he could use SFTP and SCP from end to end. As Kevin from VanDyke Software Support explained, doing this requires multiple sessions with distinct port forwarding and firewall configuration. As a brief overview, the approach is to configure a session that defines the ports that need to be tunneled. Then, use that session as a firewall/proxy in a second session and use dynamic port forwarding with a different port number. This configuration is also used as a firewall/proxy for the third hop, which sets up the SFTP session. For the complete forum post including step-by-step instructions on setting up each session, visit the VanDyke Software forum. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Continuous improvement is, well, continuous. So even though the 6.0 versions are just out, we want your feedback on which elements of SecureCRT and SecureFX you like best, as well as where you believe the software still needs improvement. Your responses will be used to guide ongoing product development and delivery. Please take a few minutes to visit the survey web page today to share your thoughts with us. We will report back to you on the results.
