begin! ------------- 1. SecureCRT 6.0 & SecureFX 6.0 Official -- Together At Last -------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- At VanDyke Software our customers look to us for help in saving time, cutting out steps, and eliminating busywork. The 6.0 versions, now in official release, deliver new time-saving features, with a button bar for repeated commands and draggable tabs in SecureCRT 6.0, and an editable address bar and true mirroring with delete in SecureFX 6.0. But that's not all. Along the way to saving time, we smoothed the path to productivity with an updated user interface, increased integration of SecureCRT and SecureFX, and more flexible, manageable installers. We'll cover these features first, then get back to the latest ways to shave minutes and hours off your work day. Both applications use Windows display themes for the toolbar and menu bar, which let you choose from five Windows and Office looks to match your work environment. A new toolbar and menu system brings with it a drag-and-drop customization dialog to SecureFX and SecureCRT. Finally, SecureCRT 6.0 provides control over alpha transparency, where you specify the transparency level of the active and inactive windows. This allows you to see behind a SecureCRT window or compare two windows. Back to those new time-saving features. Additions to tabbed sessions and a new button bar lead the way for SecureCRT 6.0, while for SecureFX, the leader is true mirroring. SecureCRT tab functionality is dramatically extended by the ability to move tabs in and out of windows, send an active tab to a new SecureCRT window, clone a tabbed session in a new window, or drag and drop between SecureCRT windows. This makes it easy to send a tabbed session to a new window, view the output of two sessions, then drag the session back in. The new button bar below the session window allows any internal menu and session commands, as well as scripts and external programs, to be mapped to a button. A great use is for long, complex configuration commands that are easy to mistype or forget. Multiple button bars are also supported. SecureFX 6.0 gains true mirroring with file deletion for more automated file maintenance. For fast, direct navigation, an editable SecureFX address bar lets you type in paths directly, copy and paste paths, and use the history to recall previously used addresses. New installer highlights are a custom installer to set up SecureCRT and
SecureFX on U3 smart drives, a combined installer option for SecureCRT
and SecureFX, and an MSI-based installer To learn more about the SecureCRT 6.0 and SecureFX 6.0 official releases, visit the product pages. To try the official releases, go to the download
section. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Taking your applications with you on a U3 smart drive is a popular option with highly mobile SecureCRT and SecureFX 6.0 users. The U3 system solves most of the previous limitations of running applications on USB drives. So if you tried to run the software from a USB drive before and were frustrated, you might want to give this another chance. For those of you who manage many network devices or provide end-user support and troubleshooting, maximize your productivity by taking SecureCRT with you wherever you go, complete with all your sessions, login scripts, and other key settings. The U3 installation ensures that SecureCRT can always find the configuration information, no matter what the USB drive mapping is. This tip acquaints you with the way a U3 installation works and points out ways you can tweak your system for maximum portability. Read the complete tip here. To download the U3 installer for SecureCRT and SecureFX 6.0, visit the VanDyke Software download page. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In addition to many new capabilities in SecureCRT 6.0 and SecureFX 6.0 that increase user productivity, these versions also help network managers save time and enforce security policy with a new MSI-based installer. MSI, also known as "Windows Installer", is a powerful architecture with many facets such as self-repair and rollback. The major advantage for VanDyke Software clients is the ability to deploy them using group policy through a distribution server such as SMS. MSI allows the administrator to predefine all the options in the installation wizard, such as where to locate files or whether to add a shortcut to the Start menu. One way to do this is with an answer file. For SecureCRT 6.0 and SecureFX 6.0, the answer file contains the following options, which override the corresponding default settings: - Target installation directory If you want to learn more about automating installation of SecureCRT and SecureFX, send e-mail to VanDyke Software Customer Support at . With the new level of integration between SecureCRT and SecureFX, it's high time to have one installer that takes care of both applications at once. The combined installer makes for a quicker install with no chance for incompatible configuration. It has a clear benefit for any bundle user, whether an individual or a large organization.
