NEWS YOU CAN USE FROM VANDYKE SOFTWARE® This issue of News You Can Use is packed from end to end with smart application usage tips. First is a look at using the SecureFX® SFXCL command-line utility to check for remote files, then a review of SSH agent forwarding capability in SecureCRT®. The tips section is rounded off with a handy forum thread on converting spaces in SecureCRT terminal data to tabs. In the middle we announce testing of the VShell® FTPS server for UNIX, which expands protocol choices for secure file transfer. Last, we announce a maintenance release for all products. ------------- -------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------- SFXCL is a command-line utility in SecureFX that can be used to automate routine secure file transfer operations. Combined with public-key-only authentication, it is possible to automate secure, unattended file transfers. SFXCL also supports deleting, renaming, moving, and listing files. In some file transfer scenarios, you might need to know if a particular file or subset of files exists on a remote server. SFXCL can provide a complete file listing of a specified folder on a remote system. However, what if you only need to know if a specific file exists, and you don't want to manually search the results looking for a proverbial needle in a haystack of files and folders? While SFXCL's /List functionality supports specifying a remote folder path, it doesn't currently support specifying file names, wildcards, or other patterns for filtering output. As a workaround, however, you can use the Find CMD utility to help narrow the results of SFXCL's /List output. Agent forwarding simplifies authentication when connecting to one remote host through another, so it is definitely something you want to take advantage of. This version of the VShell server provides a secure file transfer option using the FTP protocol in which all data sent or received can be protected by SSL- (Secure Sockets Layer) and TLS- (Transport Layer Security) based encryption. If you would like to test and provide feedback on this feature, please send e-mail to . ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A few months ago, forum member ebogaard asked how to deal with spaces in data copied from a SecureCRT terminal window to the Clipboard. He posted the following: "When I copy some code and paste it somewhere else, the tabs are replaced with spaces." This happens for a variety of reasons; often the host sends data to the remote with spaces. This behavior can be a problem, for example, if you use tabs to structure columnar data. To address the issue, VanDyke Software Customer Support has written a script that converts spaces into tabs before data is placed on the Clipboard. A link to the script is provided in the forum thread listed below. It can be mapped to a button or a key combination for quick access. Another script example provided in the thread allows you to choose from among several different line attributes to convert. In addition to converting spaces to tabs, it can also be used to convert line endings or just see what's currently in the clipboard before pasting.
