How can I make SecureCRT the default SSH2 application for Windows so that I can launch it from a web browser?

Note: This tip is for use with SecureCRT® for Windows®.

If you have SecureCRT 5.5 or later, open the Global Options dialog and navigate to the "Web Browser" category. Then click the "Make SecureCRT Your Default SSH2 Application" button.

For versions of SecureCRT prior to 5.5, to set up SecureCRT as your default SSH2 application, make the following changes in your registry.

  1. Open regedit and navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\telnet.
  2. Export this branch to a registry file by selecting "Export" from the "File" menu. Be sure to choose "Selected branch" as the "Export range" option.
  3. Edit the .reg file and replace every instance of "telnet" with "ssh2".
  4. If the key KEY_CLASSES_ROOT\telnet\shell\open\command is not in the .reg file, manually add the following lines to the end of the file.
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ssh2\shell\open\command]
    @="\"C:\\Program Files\\SecureCRT\\SecureCRT.exe\" %1"
Be sure to put in the appropriate protocol name. If your SecureCRT location is different than the one shown above, you will need to modify it to use your install folder.
  5. After saving the registry file, double-click on it to import it to the registry.

You will now be able to start SecureCRT from your web browser by typing "ssh2://<hostname>" or by inserting that link in a web page.
