What can I do
if I receive a "Failed to create root key" error message?
This error may occur in versions of SecureFX® prior to 3.0 if the
database files or the directory in which they reside have READ-ONLY
or other
restricted
permissions
so that the files cannot be modified. More rarely, this error message
may also be the result of the session database somehow becoming
corrupted. This can happen if the program does not shut down properly
The following steps may help solve the problem.
- Please make sure you are using our latest official release
of SecureFX, which can be downloaded from the following location:
http://www.vandyke.com/download/securefx
This version includes fixes for some known problems that were
present in earlier versions.
- Go to your SecureFX installation directory (e.g., C:\Program
Files\SecureFX) and find the following two files:
SecureFX.idx
SecureFX.dat
- Make sure that the permissions on both of these files are NOT
set to READ-ONLY. Additionally, make sure that you have write
permissions in the installation directory (you should have the
ability to change the permissions on these files and modify files
in the directory).
- Run the SecureFX program and open the "Session Database Location"
dialog on the Options menu. Verify that the path displayed in
this dialog is identical to the installation directory found in
step 1.
If taking these steps does not solve the problem, then the database
may be corrupt. If you can, please e-mail to us as a MIME attachment
a copy of the SecureFX.idx and SecureFX.dat files in your SecureFX
install directory. Also, if you believe you can reproduce the problem,
please include any reproducible steps that may have contributed
to your session database becoming corrupted. In the meantime, you'll
need to delete, rename or move the corrupted session database files
to get them out of the way.
- Rename or delete both of these files or move them to a different
directory. Unfortunately, there is currently no way to recover
the data in these corrupted database files, which means that any
personal sessions you created are lost. We apologize for the inconvenience.
- At this point, install the latest version of SecureFX again,
which will include a new copy of the original session database.
Note that simply uninstalling and reinstalling SecureFX alone will
not fix the problem because the uninstall program intentionally
does not remove session database files.
