Initial Configuration
After installing the VShell server , you need to configure your system to ensure that it functions properly. The following sections discuss the tasks that you need to perform.
Generate Host Key
Upon initial startup, the VShell Control Panel will prompt you through the process of creating a host key. If you want to generate or designate a new host key at any other time, the Host Keys category allows you to do so. VShell requires a host key to operate.
Configure Filters
Both the connection and port-forward filters are initially configured to allow all connections and port-forward requests. Using the Connection Filters and Port-Forward Filters categories, you can add, edit, delete, and arrange the order of your filters.
Set Access Control
Choose which users or groups can connect to VShell and what access permissions they have. Use the Access Control category to set up your user list and to configure the permissions allowed each user or group
Set Logging Levels
During normal operation, VShell generates messages to keep you informed about the health and functions of VShell. These messages are categorized into groups and, using the Logging category options, VShell can be configured to log specific message groups in the VShell daily log file. This is in addition to the message groups that are automatically logged in the system event log.
The Logging Category topic describes the formats of log messages for each group and gives example messages.
Home Folder Location
When you connect to VShell, the home folder is set to one of the following places (listed in the order attempted):
1. VSHELL_HOME environment variable, if it has been defined and the folder exists.
2. User's profile home folder as defined in the user management properties, if it is specified and the folder exists.
3. The user's "My Documents" folder.
4. SystemDrive environment variable.
