How do I run VShell® on Windows NT 4.0?

If you are trying to run VShell on Windows NT 4.0, you may see the following error message when the Control Panel tries to start:

The procedure entry point __lc_collate_cp could not be located in the dynamic link library MSVCRT.DLL

The reason for this is that the version of the MSVCRT.dll in your System32 directory is too old, and Windows loads MSVCRT.dll exclusively from the System32 directory.

If this is your problem, try the following steps:

  1. In your web browser, go to the following web page:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?
    scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/Q259/4/03.ASP&NoWebContent=1

  2. Click on the "Download the VC6RedistSetup_enu.exe package now" link. This gives you to access to the required DLLs from Visual C++ 6.0.

  3. Open the VC6RedistSetup_enu.exe or save it to your machine and open it from there. When you run this file, it will install the updated MSVCRT.dll to your machine's System32 directory. Be sure to follow any instructions from the installer.

Once you've completed the above steps, VShell should run on your Windows NT 4.0 machine.
