I need to lock down my
firewall
One major security objective is to lock down your firewall as tightly as possible, closing as many ports to the Internet as you can. One way to do this is to route your external datastream through a proxy server, which uses one firewall port. Then you encrypt the datastream using Secure Shell port forwarding (data tunneling). Data tunneling with the VShell® server may be your lightweight alternative to an expensive, high-maintenance VPN solution.
The proxy tunneling approach has a number of advantages, particularly in reducing user port forward-related maintenance. The adminstrative load of configuring client applications especially is lowered. Tunneling through the proxy server can provide security for traffic that would otherwise be difficult to secure. It can also make end user security education simpler and therefore less expensive. The VShell-proxy-server approach to network security is clearly worth having in your toolbox.
