I need to log all SFTP file transfers to and from my Secure Shell server.

VShell® 2.2 for Windows and UNIX offers SFTP logging of all file transfers performed on the server. Current and emerging regulatory requirements (e.g., HIPAA, Graham-Leach-Bliley Act, Sarbanes-Oxley Act) require an auditable log of the transfer of private customer information. VShell's SFTP logging provides this information in real time. On Windows servers, this information is captured in the VShell log file and can easily be imported into a spreadsheet or database to create a file transfer activity report. On UNIX servers, VShell log activities are recorded in the system log and can be "grepped" and saved for use in a report.

Here is a sample log from a typical SFTP session:

Jul 18 15:48:19 redhat7 vshelld[15607]: sftp,00005: joe opened /home/joe/.emacs for read 747 bytes transferred.

Jul 18 15:49:46 redhat7 vshelld[15607]: sftp,00005: joe created directory /home/joe/NewDir.

Jul 18 15:50:44 redhat7 vshelld[15607]: sftp,00005: joe opened /home/joe/NewDir/sans.txt for write 1944 bytes transferred.

Jul 18 15:52:10 redhat7 vshelld[15607]: sftp,00005: Failed to retrieve information about /home/joe/NewDir/pubs: No such file or directory

Jul 18 15:52:18 redhat7 vshelld[15607]: sftp,00005: Failed to delete /home/joe/NewDir/pubs: No such file or directory

Jul 18 15:53:38 redhat7 vshelld[15607]: sftp,00005: joe deleted file /home/joe/NewDir/sans.txt.

Jul 18 15:53:43 redhat7 vshelld[15607]: sftp,00005: Failed to delete /home/joe/NewDir: Is a directory

Jul 18 15:53:53 redhat7 vshelld[15607]: sftp,00005: joe deleted directory /home/joe/NewDir.

Jul 18 15:53:59 redhat7 vshelld[15607]: sftp,00005: Sftp subsystem terminated.

Jul 18 15:53:59 redhat7 vshelld[15607]: conn,00005: Session channel has been closed (pid: none).

Jul 18 15:53:59 redhat7 vshelld[15607]: conn,00005: Connection closed.

Compare VShell' s logging with OpenSSH:

  • VShell logs all user SFTP file and directory transfers, deletions, and errors to the SysLog facility.
  • OpenSSH offers no built-in support for SFTP logging.
