The MetaPass
digital key is a small USB token with embedded software that
manages your authentication credentials for web sites, servers,
and terminals. Everyone involved with information security
understands the issues related to password authentication:
- Short, easily-remembered passwords are easily overcome
by dictionary and other brute force attacks.
- Long passwords using a mixture of capital and lowercase
letters, numbers, and special characters are far more difficult
to break but are just as difficult to remember.

There are any number of password "vault" programs
out there that run on your PC or a handheld computer (e.g.,
Palm or Pocket PC) but they require a number of steps and
can create security issues including unencrypted data left
on the Windows Clipboard (if you're a copy-and-paste person).
MetaPass automates the entire process using something they
call One-Click Login™. All you have to do is click on
the icon representing the site or server you wish to connect
to and MetaPass will launch the browser, connect, enter your
credentials, and log you into the system. MetaPass uses 448-bit
Blowfish encryption for all data stored on the device.
The reason why we felt this tool was worthy of your attention
is that it offers great support for SecureCRT®. You can
create a One-Click Login for any (or all) of your saved SecureCRT
sessions and store it on the MetaPass token. These SecureCRT
shortcuts will launch the application, enter your authentication
information and log you into your remote host. The most recent
release of the MetaPass software even allows you to establish
a connection to a terminal application (like a Cisco router
configuration interface) once the SecureCRT session is running
— all with a single click.
MetaPass also offers an administrator tool to configure and update a number
of end-user devices locally or remotely in a corporate environment.
We've arranged for VanDyke Software customers to get a special
introductory price on the MetaPass digital key. Through the
end of September, you can save 30% off the standard price
($69.00 rather than $99.00) if you visit the MetaPass
site from this page.
Here's how easy it is to set up a SecureCRT session in the MetaPass software.
1. Log into your MetaPass digital key using the Master Password
you define during setup.
2. Click on "Add" in the main screen.
3. In the setup dialog, enter your User ID and Password in
the appropriate fields. In the Path field, enter the path
to your SecureCRT installation followed by a switch to invoke
the named session you wish to start. The syntax is: "C:\Program
Files\SecureCRT\SecureCRT.exe" /S mysession where "mysession"
is the name you've used for that session. Select an icon from
the scrolling list at the bottom of the dialog.
4. That's it. You can run MetaPass in a compact view that
is always on your desktop. Clicking on the menu drops down
a list of all your saved credentials and sessions. When you
choose a SecureCRT session, MetaPass will start SecureCRT,
enter your authentication credentials, and you're ready to
get to work.
