1. Timesaving Releases: SecureCRT 5.5 and SecureFX 4.5 Official
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Many of you tried the SecureCRT 5.5 and SecureFX 4.5 clients while they were in beta release during the first quarter. The beta cycle has come to an end, the official releases are now out, and we are here to remind you how busy network professionals can use the software to save time by automating and streamlining repetitive tasks. We covered these releases extensively in the February issue; here is a quick top-level summary of the new features:

SecureCRT 5.5

  • A script recorder records keystrokes, including function keys, so you can quickly generate a VBScript.
  • Custom log data gives you the ability to specify strings to be logged upon connect, disconnect, and on each line. Parameter substitutions for session and date information are supported.

SecureFX 4.5

  • Drag and drop files into the transfer queue window.
  • Resize the transfer queue window and hide or show columns.

Both applications

  • Expanded auto session lets you define multiple sessions or folders to connect immediately on startup.
  • Cache SSH2 session passwords like passphrases while SecureCRT, SecureFX, or the Activator are running.
  • Generate keys in OpenSSH format or convert existing VanDyke Software format private keys to OpenSSH format, allowing you to use the same keys with other Secure Shell clients.

As the Windows Vista release reaches more desktops, you will be glad to know that SecureCRT and SecureFX are Vista compatible and ready to upgrade when you are.

Find out more about these new time-saving features in SecureCRT 5.5 and SecureFX 4.5.

3. VShell 3.0 Beta 1 Increases Administrator Control
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

For administrators who battle constantly to secure their networks with limited resources, the new VShell 3.0 server now in beta 1 release saves critical time by providing automation tools like triggers, controlling user access to features and files, and offering simple, powerful configuration options.

To support automation, the VShell 3.0 release substantially increases the number of VShell "trigger" conditions. Triggers function as the nerve endings of your network, helping administrators monitor and programmatically respond to network events. Triggers now include Login, Logout, File Rename, File Delete, Folder Create, Folder Rename, and Folder Delete.

The latest component of user access control is support for SCP file transfer. SCP transfer for Windows supports SCP clients that use a secure RCP replacement that forwards a remote execution request over SSH2 to the server. SCP support integrates with VShell access controls, honoring the settings for logging, access control lists (ACLs), and SFTP root directories. SCP lets network admins allow users limited file transfer ability without granting shell access permission.

In VShell for Windows, the server's trademark easy configuration adds import and export of configuration data using VShellConfig. The administrator can quickly make backups of existing configurations and move configurations to different machines. A "Listen Addresses" Control Panel page is a simple way to manage a list of IP addresses and ports that VShell for Windows will listen on. A Windows Control Panel setting for maximum connections makes it easier to limit the number of concurrent times a user can log on to VShell.

A native 64-bit (x64) Windows version for the VShell 3.0 server allows public-key-only authentication on the 64-bit Windows platform. Also, a custom modular edition of VShell is available to streamline configuration and distribution for large customers. Contact VanDyke Software Sales for more information on the VShell Custom Edition.

5. Did You Know? Create Shortcut To A SecureCRT Session
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Set up SecureCRT to go to work for you right away. You can create a Windows desktop shortcut to a SecureCRT session that will automatically connect when you start SecureCRT from that icon. To try this, just right click on any SecureCRT session and select "Create Desktop shortcut."

6. Heard On The Forums: Comparing Strings In VBScript
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is an interesting post from Forum user "wirelessmonk01". He asked how he could edit a string and compare it to another string in a script to manage logins to Cisco routers. "Big che" threw out a way to get the router ID, "miked" from Customer Support provided ideas on regular expression matching, "dmtanger" suggested a way to extract characters, and "Chaucer" posted a similar script he wrote – a beautiful example of the forum community in action.
