As Agent Jack Bauer often says, "There's no more time!" We took that to heart in product development, and two new beta releases this month focus on saving time.

The SecureCRT® 5.5 beta release unveils a script recorder, SecureFX® 4.5 beta improves the transfer queue, while both clients have expanded auto-session capabilities. 1. Time's A Wastin' – Get The SecureCRT 5.5 Beta Release
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Who couldn't use more time? Short of a twenty-five hour clock, the best way we know to recover time is to spend less somewhere else, like the software you live in all day long. The beta release of SecureCRT 5.5 gives you many time-saving features, with a script recorder and expanded auto-session capabilities.

The SecureCRT 5.5 script recorder allows you to quickly record keystrokes, including function keys, and generate a VBScript. The recorder speeds up the process for everyone and brings scripting within reach of less experienced users. See the separate article below, "Recording Scripts in SecureCRT 5.5", for more information.

SecureCRT 5.5 also expands the auto session options to allow you to select one or more sessions or even folders of sessions to connect automatically on startup. And this version delivers password caching and sharing between SecureCRT and SecureFX.

As always, SecureCRT evolves and is refined by constant contact with customers and users through the online Forums and the technical support group. In this cycle, user-requested features include improved ANSI color, expanded logging options with the ability to specify strings and parameter substitutions for custom log data, and more tab scripting.

Of course, we looked after security, administration, and interoperability, too, with OpenSSH private key support, zlib@openssh.com compression, improved integration with SecureFX, and support for Windows Vista. OpenSSH key support gives you the ability to generate keys in OpenSSH format using the Key Generation wizard and convert a SecureCRT-generated private key to OpenSSH format, allowing you to use the same keys with other Secure Shell clients.

2. SecureFX 4.5 Beta Gets You Up And Running Faster
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you need to get through file transfer tasks more quickly, the SecureFX 4.5 client will get you started faster and keep productivity high. The SecureFX 4.5 auto session lets you connect one or more sessions or even folders of sessions automatically on startup. Time savings also come from password caching and sharing between SecureCRT and SecureFX, and a toolbar button to launch SecureCRT.

We took your feedback on the transfer queue and raised it to the next level. Drag and drop has been added, as well as resizing and other window control options. SecureFX now sports a SecureCRT toolbar button that opens directly to the command shell for sessions configured with terminal protocols. As with SecureCRT 5.5, SecureFX 4.5 adds zlib@openssh.com compression, OpenSSH format key support, and compatibility with Windows Vista.

4. Coming Soon – New Time-Saving Features in VShell 3.0 Server
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the new VShell 3.0 server, you'll be able to save critical time using new automation tools and configuration options and by controlling user access to features and files.

Here's a sneak preview of some of the new features you'll see in the upcoming beta release:

  • New triggers: To extend automation capabilities, VShell 3.0 adds triggers for Login, Logout, File Rename, File Delete, Folder Create, Folder Rename, and Folder Delete events to increase monitoring and automation capability.
  • SCP transfer support (Windows): Built-in support for SCP clients will honor the settings for logging, access control lists (ACLs), and SFTP roots.
  • Configuration export (Windows): Using VShellConfig, you can quickly backup existing configurations and move them to different machines.
  • Native 64-bit version for Microsoft Windows XP x64: The native 64-bit version of VShell server provides full support for public-key-only authentication.

Other features include multiple host key support, a "Listen Addresses" Control Panel page, and a control panel setting in the Windows version of VShell that sets the maximum number of allowable user connections.

You can try out these new features by alpha testing the VShell 3.0 server. To test drive any of these new time-saving features, please send us a note using our online technical support form.

5. Close-up: The SecureCRT 5.5 Script Recorder
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Tired of entering the same keystrokes in your shell sessions over and over? Do you make data entry errors with complex commands? You can banish repetitive keyboarding with the SecureCRT 5.5 script recorder.

As mentioned above, when turned on, the SecureCRT script recorder captures all keystrokes and function keys under the command shell. Other operations such as connecting, disconnecting, and switching tabs cannot be recorded, though they can be added to the scripts later. Recorder commands are simple: Start, Stop, and Cancel. When you stop recording, SecureCRT prompts you to save the script. If you intend to use a script often, use a keymap to attach the script to a hotkey.

Making and using a script can be as simple as this: turn on the recorder, record keystrokes, save the file, set a keymap, then replay to your heart's content. Depending on your shell configuration, you may be able to play back recorded scripts with no modification at all. And if modifications are needed, it's much easier to start with the script recorder than to write scripts from scratch.

Learn more about this and other features that can save you time on the SecureCRT 5.5 beta product pages.

6. Did You Know? Check For Updates
--------------------------------------------------

If you're the type who frequently flies without documentation, you might not have noticed the Help menu "Check for updates" command in recent SecureCRT and SecureFX versions. Give it a try, though, it's handy. "Check for updates" takes you to a VanDyke Software web page that lists any available releases. All you do is click on a link to download the version you want. The page also shows whether a given release is a free upgrade or not.
