NEWS YOU CAN USE FROM VANDYKE SOFTWARE®

A Monthly Newsletter – September 2007

This month's issue dives right in with a way that you can increase Secure Shell access to Windows network file resources through the VShell® server. On the product development front, we are again inviting input on FTP over SSL in VShell. Our pick of the forum posts highlights a continuing need to integrate SecureCRT® and SecureFX® connections. Rounding out the offering are a review of SecureCRT sample scripts, a truly easy survey on Windows Vista adoption, and some web magic to help keep your VanDyke Software applications current.

Late adopters, start your engines! In case you were waiting for the first Windows Vista service pack before you made a move – it's in the works. Microsoft announced in e-mail to testers that an SP1 beta will appear later in September.

1. Accessing Network Resources With VShell And Public-Key-Only Authentication
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Previous to VShell server version 2.6.4 and Windows 2003 Active Directory, Windows file shares have not been easily available to Secure Shell users who authenticate using public keys, as they are with password authentication. However, if the VShell server and Windows resources are running in a properly configured Windows 2003 Active Directory domain, file shares can be made available to accounts that authenticate using public keys. We have added a detailed page to the VanDyke Software web site that explains how to do this, including all the steps necessary to configure the domain and VShell server.

2. Customer Input Needed On FTP Over SSL
-----------------------------------------------------------

We are still interested in customer feedback on the design of support for secure FTP over an SSL connection. This protocol alternative will be an option in an upcoming version of VShell.

If you are interested in previewing this capability, please send e-mail to VanDyke Software Customer Support at .

3. Heard On The Forums: Share Connections In SecureCRT And SecureFX
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Forum user RandyJ posted recently, "I have connections built [defined] in SecureCRT to remote machines using SSH2, and I would like to use the same connection in SecureFX." The step-by-step instructions provided by Kevin of VanDyke Software Support allow separately installed copies of SecureCRT 5.2 and SecureFX 4.0 to merge configuration databases and settings. This is not the latest news, but there are many users who have not yet integrated their copies of SecureCRT and SecureFX.
