Important product update: Development of CRT to cease

CRT 6.1 will be the final version.

In 1995 when CRT was first released, Telnet was a popular choice for remote shell access.

In 1998, Vandyke Software introduced SecureCRT® to address increasing concern over Telnet's inherent lack of security. Supporting SSH1 and SSH2 as well as Telnet, Serial, Rlogin, and TAPI, SecureCRT is a multi-protocol application for your remote access and emulation needs.

We have made the decision to cease active development of CRT and concentrate on enhancing SecureCRT. Many organizations are turning off Telnet. SecureCRT can help with this transition, because Telnet can be used until it has been replaced by SSH1 or SSH2.

We will continue to make CRT installers available for download for existing customers, but will no longer sell new licenses for the application, effective September 1, 2008. We plan to continue offering support for CRT customers through September 30, 2009.

SecureCRT has all the functionality of CRT, plus the secure protocols SSH1 and SSH2 and you can use your CRT settings in SecureCRT .

CRT 6.0's new time-saving features include support for moving tabs between windows, and a button bar that allows you to map frequently used commands, scripts, and menu functions. An updated user interface delivers alpha transparency, Windows display themes, and drag-and-drop customization of the menu and toolbar. MSI support simplifies and automates distribution and installation.

New for CRT 6.0

New time-saving features:

  • Move tabs in and out of windows: Send an active tab to a new CRT window, clone a tabbed session in a new window, or drag and drop between CRT windows. This makes it easy to send a tabbed session to a new window, view the output of two sessions at the same time, and then drag the session back in.
  • Button bar: Map buttons to configuration commands or actions, such as sending strings, running scripts, menu functions, and protocol commands. You can also create different button bars for specific sessions or operations.
  • Launch external programs: Launch external programs (like your favorite editor, cmd.exe, or regedit) on the local machine through mapped keys and buttons on the button bar, reducing the number of context switches you need to make.
  • Autoreconnect prompt and countdown in session window: The autoreconnect prompt and countdown are now displayed in the session window instead of in a dialog, allowing connected sessions to be used while a disconnected session is trying to reconnect.
  • Use environment variables in paths: You can now use environment variables like APPDATA, TEMP, and USERPROFILE in paths specified in CRT global and session options, making it easier to move/copy settings to other machines and to create configurations that will work for multiple users.

Improved user interface:

  • Support for alpha transparency: Specify the transparency level for the active and inactive windows so that you can view what's behind a CRT window or easily compare the contents of two CRT windows.
  • New toolbar and menu bar themes: The toolbar and menu bar now use Windows display themes.
  • Customize the toolbar and menu: New dialog supports dragging and dropping toolbar and menu items, so that it's easy to modify the toolbar and menu to suit your needs.

New installer options:

  • MSI installers: MSI support allows you to distribute the applications through your distributions server using Group Policy and to automate installs through SMS or other install programs.

Other new features:

  • Session locking: Lock sessions with a password while connected. While a session is locked, it cannot be typed in or closed.
  • Check for product updates: An optional monthly pop-up dialog allows you to check for product updates.
