NEWS YOU CAN USE FROM VANDYKE SOFTWARE®

A Monthly Newsletter – July 2004

Vacations are good things. Whether we're headed for Tucson or Tuscany, they give us incentive to clean up our desks before we leave, even if it's the only time all year. And whatever else happens, we return with a different perspective, and maybe better rested as well. Well, the newsletter doesn't exactly take a vacation, but we do have a new summer job: finding new ways to keep bringing you more and better ideas on how to use the software. This month the lead piece delivers some clever installer tweaks to put in your quiver. The VanDyke Software web team has also been busy responding to user requests, with a lot to show for it: everything from product discussion forums to better feed-back forms. www.vandyke.com is worth a fresh look too. You might even see someone you know; the revised home page links to a section on interesting customers we've heard from recently. So please review what's new, then get back to us using (naturally) our improved feedback forms. Just click on the "Got a question or comment?" link in the upper right corner of any page (except the home page).

We'll be giving the newsletter a short break in August, so look for the next issue in September. If you can, give yourself a break this summer by taking a vacation. Even a long weekend can give you a fresh perspective.

1. Tip – Try /S For "Silent" Installation
-------------------------------------------------

If you are installing VanDyke client or server applications for Windows on a number of machines, it can be time-consuming to run the installation wizard on each machine. Or, if you are upgrading your software, you may want a quick way to do the installation and keep all your current settings.

The /S flag allows you to bypass the wizard panels and run the installer from the command line silently, or non-interactively. When you invoke /S, the installer accepts all default settings, or keeps all of your existing settings if you are upgrading. (If you are installing VShell™, the machine will automatically reboot after the installation is complete.)

Here's how to install SecureCRT® or other VanDyke application using the /S flag. This example assumes you have a copy of the installer already downloaded to a local c:\Installers directory.

1. Log in at the console, or log in to the remote machine where you want to install the software
2. At a command prompt, type: c:\Installers\>scrt417.exe /S

For instructions on combining /S with the VShell /NOREBOOT optionand cloning a VShell configuration on multiple machines, see the expanded tip on the Vandyke Software web site:

3. New Discussion Forums – How Do You Use VanDyke Software?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since their launch earlier this year, the VanDyke Software Roadmap forums have seen considerable activity, with great questions, musings, and suggestions for features. Now we've added additional discussion forums to give you a place for a wider range of conversations. The new forums you can join include a general discussion forum as well as forums focused on Secure Shell, file transfer, and scripting.

Visit the new forums to ask questions, exchange ideas, and otherwise share your wealth of knowledge about VanDyke Software products. As one forum participant remarked, "There are other people that have had similar problems ... and I can learn from their efforts."

If you use an RSS aggregator, you can subscribe individually to each of the forums you're interested in and you'll receive a new feed in your RSS reader whenever a new post is made. RSS feed icons are located on the Forums index page at:
