Fall IT Security Survey - Midsize Intrusions Increased In 2008

Results of the Fourth Annual Enterprise IT survey, sponsored by VanDyke Software and released October 14th, found that overall levels of unauthorized access or intrusions are holding steady in 2008 except in midsize companies, which showed an increase.

Overall, close to half of survey participants reported that their organization had experienced a successful intrusion of a machine, network, or server in 2008. Among midsized companies this number rose to 61%, significantly higher than the past three years. Respondents also reported that these intrusions had the potential to result in loss of critical data with a high potential financial impact.

2. Survey Results – SecureCRT for Mac OS X

Last month we surveyed you to learn more about how you use the Mac, and what features you would like to see in SecureCRT for the Mac platform.

Those of you who responded were not just home and educational users: a significant number of corporate IT users were among the participants, with a sizable portion in larger organizations. Job titles tended to be technical, from IT managers to developers, with some executives for good measure.

Not surprisingly, well over half of those who responded were current Mac users. The same proportion say they will not be running Windows on a desktop a year from now. As for their needs, over half wanted to see the same session management and tabbed interface that the Windows version offers.

The most surprising result was that over half of those who responded said there was a trend in their organization to move away from Windows within 12 months.

The survey is now closed, but we want to get your input during initial development. Send your requirements and comments directly to Maureen Jett, the SecureCRT product director, at .

3. SecureCRT 6.1 Feature Spotlight: New Log On Options

The SecureCRT 6.1 client provides several new options for system logon that you will want to consider if you need to control the log on process or your initial session window state. They are the option to log on through the terminal window, to run scripts at logon, and to expand your use of expect-send capabilities.

4. Tips: Using Sawmill To Analyze VShell Server Log Files

Beginning with version 3.5, the VShell server for Windows has the ability to log using the W3C extended log file format. This new format allows the use of third-party log analysis tools to analyze the VShell log files. Log analysis tools like Sawmill combined with VShell's W3C logging support offer a way to answer many questions you may have concerning the activity on your VShell server. These tools parse the VShell log files and report information regarding the server traffic.

This tip discusses how to set up the Sawmill log analysis tool with VShell's log files and how to apply its analysis and filtering capabilities. To read the complete on analyzing VShell logs with the VShell 3.5 server, visit the VanDyke Software support pages to read the complete .
