1. Change Session Settings Quickly With SecureCRT 6.2

If you've been hibernating the last few months and only just came out of your den, your timing is great: the official release of SecureCRT 6.2 was on March 31st. Here are some new things you can do with SecureCRT 6.2:

  • Modify settings for multiple sessions all at once
  • Remember and connect to sessions from your last use
  • Rotate log files nightly
  • Use substitution parameters in log file paths
  • Manage public-key authentication from the Activator
  • Simplify smart-card authentication with PKCS #11 support
  • Run a native 64-bit version on x64 Windows machines

Multi-session editing makes it easy to change settings to a selected group of sessions. If for example your security policy requires changing passwords on network devices regularly, you can update SSH2 session passwords for the selected sessions in just three basic steps:

  1. Select a group of sessions.
  2. Right-click the group and select Properties.
  3. Go to SSH2, select Password in the Authentication group, and then click on Properties.

The best way to learn about this new release is to download a copy from our website and try a free 30-day evaluation. SecureCRT 6.2 is a free upgrade for users with licenses or maintenance purchased after January 1, 2008.

2. SecureFX 6.2 Official Adds Filters to File Synchronization

With the official release of SecureFX 6.2 you can now apply filters to synchronize operations, increasing your control and saving you time. You can include or exclude files and file types, and allow wildcards. Software developers could apply this to exclude .svn folders, while webmasters might specify a web server update to include only JPEG files. Settings can be saved to the synchronize session database introduced in version 6.1.

Here are the steps to exclude .svn folders from a synchronize operation.

  1. From the Quick Synchronize or Synchronization Session Properties dialog, select New... in the Filter drop-down list.
  2. In the Filter Properties dialog, do the following:
    1. Enter a name for the filter (e.g., Exclude .svn).
    2. Select Exclude as the Type.
    3. Enter .svn in the Criteria entry box and click on the Add button.
    4. Check the Apply to folders box.
    5. Click OK to save the filter.
  3. Make sure the new filter is the selected filter.

Beyond filters, SecureFX expands your control in session management, FTP transfer, and SSH2 connections.

Session management:

    • Change settings for groups of sessions all at once
    • Connect automatically to sessions open the last time you ran SecureFX

FTP and Secure FTP (FTP/SSL) transfer:

    • Mutual authentication allows self-signed certificates
    • Limit local FTP ports to a specific range to work with tight firewall restrictions

    • Simplify smart-card authentication with PKCS #11 support
    • Manage keys in the Activator with Agent support

For x64 Windows users, SecureFX is now offered in a native 64-bit version.

4. New Scripting Manual Chapter -- Remote Connections

The latest chapter of the Scripting Essentials Manual from VanDyke Software Support covers a key area of automation: connecting to remote machines. Whether it's a database server down the hall or a web server across the continent, few topics are more fundamentalto automation than the remote connection. The chapter covers how to open and close preconfigured and ad hoc connections, create multiple tab connections, handle connection failures, and close connections.

5. Updated Silent Installation Tip Now Available

After changes to the installation software starting with SecureCRT 6.0, SecureFX 6.0, and VShell® server 3.5, we revised the tip that shows how to run the installer in its silent or unattended mode. The revised tip not only includes instructions on the simple command-line switches for silent mode, but it
explains the "answer file" configuration used in newer versions of Windows. For VanDyke Software applications, the answer file gives you greater control over behavior such as machine rebooting after installing VShell.

4. New and Current Releases

The official releases of SecureCRT 6.2, SecureFX 6.2 and ClientPack 6.2 were made March 31, 2009.
