A Monthly Newsletter – December 2009

Last month you read comments from beta testers on the enhanced user interfaces of SecureFX® 6.5 and SecureCRT® 6.5.  Now the software is in official release and ready for prime time, along with ClientPack 6.5 and the new VRALib component for .NET and COM, as well as VShell® 3.6.  In case you missed an issue or two of the newsletter this year, we will recap some of the most popular technical features.  There is also a reminder to use your free update if it is available for your license.  And since we're at the end of another great year for secure remote access and file transfer, we'd like to take this opportunity to thank you all for giving us your trust, support, and feedback.

1. SecureFX 6.5 Official – Tabs for Flexibility, Productivity

The new official release of SecureFX 6.5 is packed with new user interface enhancements for higher productivity, with better session organization, easier navigation, and Windows 7 integration.

Adding tabs to SecureFX brings it up to SecureCRT's level in session organization and ease of use, making them a potent ombination.  The tab interface makes it fast and easy to organize local, remote, and synchronize views, providing a flexible, familiar workspace.  Here are examples of what you can do with the new tabbed interface:

    • Organize sessions in tabs on one or two panes
    • Drag sessions between panes as needed
    • Choose between horizontal and vertical orientation
    • Run Quick Synchronize in a tab
    • View the transfer queue status window under tab panes

Further enhancements to the look and feel keep SecureFX fresh and integrated with whatever version of Windows you use:

    • Fresh UI themes: choose blue, black, silver, or aqua
    • Windows 7 taskbar integration:  previews, pinned icons, and jump lists
    • Parent (..) folder icon smoothes navigation

SCP has been added to the file transfer protocols for compatibility with a wider range of systems.

2. SecureCRT 6.5 Official – Tab Status, Keyword Highlighting

While SecureFX 6.5 shows a completely new tab capability, the official release of SecureCRT extends its tab interface and adds important core functionality, including real-time keyword highlighting for the session window.

At the top of the list for SecureCRT 6.5 are new status indicators to let you easily monitor tabbed sessions.  Here are some of the highlights:

    • More status indicator display options on session tabs, including a fully colored tab background for high visibility
    • A new "inactivity" state shows when commands are finished
    • New option to position tabs at the bottom of the SecureCRT window

SecureCRT 6.5 also increases integration with Windows Explorer, streamlines the user interface, and capitalizes on the fast access capabilities of the Windows 7 taskbar:

    • Drag and drop files from Windows Explorer to SecureCRT to quickly start a transfer using SFTP or other protocols
    • Fresh UI themes: choose blue, black, silver, or aqua
    • Windows 7 taskbar integration: previews, pinned icons, and jump lists
    • Cleaner, more flexible button bar

Keyword highlighting is new to SecureCRT, while Unicode support and authentication have been improved:

    • Real-time highlighting of select keywords in the remote data stream in the session window
    • Improved Unicode support including multiple languages in the same session
    • Native support for Amazon EC2 keys in SecureCRT
