A Monthly Newsletter – December 2010

It's been another good year at VanDyke Software. As the IT sector rebounds slowly from the recession, our company continues to deliver the greatest value we possibly can. This month we take a look back at the most significant events of 2010 from several perspectives. Then we look ahead with testing for upcoming releases of SecureCRT® and VShell®. Last, we highlight some methods used by SecureCRT users to get the terminal behavior they need. Our best wishes for a good, safe holiday season wherever you are.

2. SecureCRT Call for Testers, Including Linux Alpha

VanDyke Software developers have been busy since the official release of SecureCRT 6.6. The following is the list of new capabilities ready for pre-beta testing:

  • SecureCRT for Linux (Ubuntu Linux 10.x)
  • SecureCRT for Mac: Paste path on dragging to a local shell session, option to paste path on dragging to a remote session
  • All platforms: Script recorder records Python scripts
  • All platforms: More buttons on the button bar, copying between button bars, and moving buttons within a button bar
  • All platforms: Option to sort sessions logically in the Connect dialog

Please contact SecureCRT product director Maureen Jett at if you are interested in participating in pre-beta testing.

Yes, you saw right in that list; we are pleased to announce that SecureCRT for Linux is ready for pre-beta testing! This new platform offers the same capabilities as SecureCRT for the Mac 6.6, with the addition of a script recorder with Python output. Ubuntu Linux 10.x is the first distribution. Please let Maureen know what distributions you would be interested in, as others are likely to be added.

VShell Call for Testers: Real-Time Monitoring

VanDyke Software continues to seek customers to test new capabilities in pre-beta releases. This month we are looking for users to preview and give us feedback on the VShell Monitor, the upcoming real-time connection monitoring tool.

The VShell Monitor allows a server administrator to view active connections to the VShell server in real time. The VShell Monitor displays copious connection information:

  • Who is connected
  • Time the connection was established
  • Client IP address
  • Total number of bytes sent and received
  • Current and average throughput

The VShell Monitor also allows the administrator to disconnect selected sessions.

If you would like to test and provide feedback on the new VShell Monitor, please send e-mail to .

Heard on the Forums: Sample Scripts for Sending Commands

This month's selections from the online user forums give examples of how you can use scripting to streamline sending commands to multiple sessions.

The first example script shows how to send commands read from a file to all connected tabs.

The second example script shows how to run a command on many different servers, logging all results to a single log file.
