How to Configure Secure CRT to Use a PPK File for Public-Key Authentication

SecureCRT supports the use of private keys in PPK format. To configure SecureCRT to use a .ppk key file, specify the path to the .ppk key file in the Public Key Properties window as described below:

  1. Right-click on the entry you wish to configure in SecureCRT's session manager and choose Properties.
  2. When the Session Options window appears, navigate to the SSH2 category, select the PublicKey row in the Authentication list and then click the Properties button ("gear" icon).
  3. In the Public Key Properties window, enable the Use session public key setting option to configure the .ppk file for only this session.
  4. Enable the Use identity or certificate file option and specify the path to the .ppk key file you need to use.
  5. Press the OK buton to save your changes to the Public Key Properties configuration.
  6. Press the OK button to save your changes to the selected session.

Hint:

If you need to use the same .ppk file for all or the majority of your saved sessions, you can select the Use global public key setting, specify the path to the desired .ppk file, and then make sure all of your saved sessions have the Use global public key setting also enabled. You can employ the power of editing the Default session to make these changes to all of your existing and future sessions. Here are some links to a tip and a video that provide more details about using the Default session to make mass changes to multiple sessions:
